There's a reason why the saying "pain in the neck" exists, and it's not because everybody loves having neck pain. It's a hassle, it's annoying, it interferes with your daily life, and it can be debilitating. If you have it, you want it gone and gone for good. Unfortunately, about 30% of people have neck pain (even more common in populations with sedentary jobs), affecting about 9 million people every year. More than half of people with neck pain have recurrent issues, and those of you with neck pain know what I mean. Whether it's a daily occurrence, monthly, or a flare up every couple years, neck pain and headaches like to rear their ugly heads again and again. Too bad there's nothing we can do about it right?
Well, it turns out that chiropractic is great at treating neck pain and headaches! Neck pain and headaches have many of the same common causes, like myofascial injuries (damage to muscle, usually through repetitive use and bad posture), lack of exercise, restricted motion at the cervical and thoracic spine, and chronic muscle imbalances (also due to repetitive use and bad posture). The muscles and joints of the neck also very commonly refer pain into the head, behind the eye, and to the shoulder/scapula. Go ahead and google "trapezius pain referral" and tell me if that looks familiar, and that's just one neck muscle.
People who suffer from migraines know that those headaches show no mercy. Debilitating pain, light and sound sensitivity, nausea, and vomiting are all common symptoms of migraines. Although we don't have a great idea of what causes migraines, some triggers include stress, hypersensitivity of the nervous system (in particular abnormal serotonin levels), hormonal changes, and dehydration. Adjusting helps to normalize nervous system activity and can help to decrease stress hormone levels. Stay tuned for a later blog about this, but there is also growing evidence that the bacteria in your gut play a huge role in the availability of serotonin in your brain (read "Brain Maker" by David Perlmutter if you're interested).
There might be a lot going on that is influencing your neck pain, headaches, or migraines. Fortunately, chiropractic care can help and we see the benefits every day!
